Leah Nanako Winkler

On The Couch with us this week is award-winning playwright, screenwriter and the book writer of the Off-Broadway musical Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, Leah Nanako Winkler. With music and lyrics by the late, great Duncan Sheik, this production is based on a critically acclaimed Japanese manga of the same name and is in performances at The Culture Club in Chelsea. Winkler’s acclaimed work spans stage and screen, from plays including God Said This, to television credits including “The Summer I Turned Pretty”. Leah has strong opinions on everything from Kewpie mayonnaise to pimple patches, and an even stronger attachment to her three-legged cat, Himeko. Read the full interview here.
What do you consider to be your best asset?
I’m a really good friend.
What was your proudest moment?
I bought my mom a business class flight to Japan with money I made from writing. I felt the proudest when she sent me a photo of the ice cream they gave her.
What is your favorite drink?
Depends on the bar but lately I’ve been revisiting cosmos. Also, water is great!!
What is your favorite food?
Natto (fermented soybeans – a Japanese breakfast delight)
What is your favorite condiment?
Kewpie mayonnaise but I actually can’t keep it in the house because I’d just drink it from the tube.
What is your current obsession?
My three-legged cat Himeko. I desperately miss her right now simply because she’s in the other room.
If you could give up one of your vices, what would it be?
I can give up any of my vices I just choose not to.
What is the one professional accomplishment you long for most?
I’m just happy to be here.
What is the one thing you waste too much money on?
Cabs and ubers after rehearsal.
What is the one activity you waste too much time doing?
I watch hours and hours of that one TikTok influencer who does Gail Godot impressions. I think I’ve lost a year of my life. Kal-El no!
What do you consider to be the single greatest threat to your health?
Workaholic.
What’s the single best trait you inherited or learned from your parents?
You don’t need a lot of money to have a great meal.
What’s the single worst trait you inherited or learned from your parents?
Dismissing your own pain because life is hard for everyone.
What in the world most thrills you?
Doing a show!
What current trend in popular culture most irritates you?
I have to say pimple patches. I’m sorry but no.
What was the most embarrassing moment you’ve ever experienced on the job?
Crying. I am not a beautiful cryer and I enjoy looking nice.
What is your favorite place in the world?
Kamakura, Japan.
What is the most important trait you seek in a romantic partner?
Sense of humor and good arms.
Do you prefer the company of dogs or cats?
Cats.
What would have to happen to make today the best day of your life?
Britney Spears comes to my door and tells me everything.
What is your personal motto?
It changes but right now – “That is none of my business.”
