Lee Kinney
On the couch this week is sound designer Lee Kinney, Tony-nominated for The Fear of 13. In the play starring Adrien Brody and Tessa Thompson, Kinney creates an impressively isolating environment on stage to reflect the prison conditions. Read below for our interview with this first time Tony Nominee.

What do you consider to be your best asset?
This is a deeply unfair first question for a terminally self-deprecating Canadian with mild moderate to severe imposter syndrome but I think I’m <shudder> a good hang. I like to think I supply good vibes in the workplace.
What was your proudest moment?
Maybe some recency bias showing, but it’s tough to beat being nominated for a Tony Award.
What is your favorite drink?
Very cold daiquiri on a very hot day. Or a dark n stormy on New Years Eve.
What is your favorite food?
This changes too much to really pick, but I get into a real rhythm repeating meals during rehearsals. This year I leaned heavy on butter chicken at Saar and dry pot at MáLà Project. Oh and I really abused the entire menu at Añejo, but especially the chips and salsa (shout out Añejo Hell’s Kitchen for fueling 3 full techs this season).
What is your favorite condiment?
Ok so funny you should ask because it is salsa.
What is your current obsession?
Peggy Gou.
If you could give up one of your vices, what would it be?
Ordering in.
What is the one professional accomplishment you long for most?
I really try to just work hard and be nice and let this stuff come to me because surprise is just so much more inspiring than disappointment. A couple years ago I would have said I hope to work with David Lynch.
What is the one thing you waste too much money on?
How can there be any answer but Uber?
What is the one activity you waste too much time doing?
I play a lot of video games, but I don’t think of that as wasted time it’s too satisfying to be a waste. Waiting for the subway feels like ultimate life waste.
What do you consider to be the single greatest threat to your health?
The New York Yankees.
What’s the single best trait you inherited or learned from your parents?
Baking brown bread (eastern Canadian molasses delicacy).
What’s the single worst trait you inherited or learned from your parents?
Being too forgiving.
What in the world most thrills you?
Dj’ing for a dance floor full of besties and we’re all locked in on the groove you cannot beat it.
What current trend in popular culture most irritates you?
Cheering for the Mets.
What was the most embarrassing moment you’ve ever experienced on the job?
Remarkably just a couple weeks ago at the lortel awards I saw Maria Striar and as I tried to hug her I punched her straight in the mouth, knuckle to tooth, and I’d like to take this opportunity, Maria, to apologize for the fifth time.
What is your favorite place in the world?
There are two connected lakes I spent a lot of time at when I was younger, in New Brunswick, Canada where I grew up — grand lake and north lake. If I could hole up in a camp on those lakes right now and make music for 2 months, that would be really dreamy.
What is the most important trait you seek in a romantic partner?
Kris 😉 . I’m all done seeking.
Do you prefer the company of dogs or cats?
Dogs. My dog Oscar is my very most preferred company.
What would have to happen to make today the best day of your life?
Oh that’s easy I would simply need to be gifted a yacht and live-in chef.
What is your personal motto?
Dinner is the best part of every day.
