New York, NY (September 27, 2026) – Producers Lia Vollack, Haley Swindal and Julie Boardman announced today that the seven-time Tony^® and Emmy^® Award-winning musical classic Damn Yankees, based on the novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant by Douglass Wallopp, will make its triumphant return to Broadway this Spring starring Tony Award and five-time Emmy Award winner Neil Patrick Harris as ‘Applegate,’ with Emmy Award winner Julianne Hough in her Broadway musical debut as ‘Lola,’ and Austin Scott (Hamilton) as ‘Young Joe.’ Following a sensation causing, sold-out engagement at Arena Stage last Fall, this newly reimagined adaptation features a book by Lucille Lortel Award winner Will Power and Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Doug Wright, with additional lyrics by Tony Award winner Lynn Ahrens, and direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo. Damn Yankees will play the Marquis Theatre (210 W 46^th St) with its first preview on Wednesday, March 24 and an official opening on Tuesday, April 20, 2027.

This newly adapted production will mark the first Broadway revival of Damn Yankees in more than 30 years. And in a first for a Broadway musical, Major League Baseball (MLB) and its Emmy Award-winning production label MLB Studios, will serve as a partner on the production.

General Management is by Foresight Theatrical. Mark Shacket of Foresight Theatrical serves as Executive Producer.

Following its sold-out engagement at Arena Stage, garnering 13 Helen Hayes Award nominations (the most of any musical this season), winning 8 Awards including Best Musical, Damn Yankees drew raves from critics, with The Washington Post declaring, “Damn Yankees knocks it out of the park,” and calling the production “a winning reinvention of a classic” and “damn-near-perfect.”

Damn Yankees debuted on Broadway in 1955, winning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It features music and lyrics by two-time Tony Award winners Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, and book by seven-time Tony Award winner and Pulitzer Prize recipient George Abbott and Tony Award winner Douglass Wallop.

Lia Vollack (MJ, Eurovision the Musical), who joins the production as a lead producer, said, “What could be more exciting than bringing Neil Patrick Harris, Julianne Hough and Austin Scott together in a musical as irresistible as Damn Yankees? Swindal is not the first in her family to bridge the gap of America’s pastime and the American musical. As the eldest granddaughter of legendary New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, she carries forward a family tradition that spans both baseball and Broadway. While Steinbrenner is best remembered as “The Boss” who transformed the Yankees into the most iconic franchise in the world, he was also a Broadway producer, investing in six productions, including the 1970 Tony Award-winning musical Applause and the 1974 Tony Award Best Musical nominee Seesaw.

BIOGRAPHIES

NEIL PATRICK HARRIS (Applegate). Neil Patrick Harris’ career spans television, film and the stage, crossing all genres.

Best known for his roles as ‘Barney Stinson’ in “How I Met Your Mother” and ‘Count Olaf’ in the Netflix adaptation of “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” Harris is a five-time Emmy Award-winner, with notable guest appearances on “American Horror Story” and “Glee.”

A veteran of the theatre, Harris originated the role of Hedwig in the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. His additional theatrical credits include Peter Pan Goes Wrong, Into the Woods, Assassins, Proof, Cabaret, Company, All My Sons, The Paris Letter, Sweeney Todd, Romeo and Juliet, Rent, Luck, Pluck, and Virtue and most recently the revival of Yasmina Reza’s play ART.

Utilizing his theatrical expertise behind the curtain, Harris made his musical directorial debut with the Hollywood Bowl’s staging of Jonathan Larson’s Rent. His additional directing credits include Nothing to Hide, The Expert at the Card Table and most recently Tick, tick… Boom! which he also starred in at the Kennedy Center in DC. Additionally, Harris produced In & Of Itself, an Off-Broadway magic show directed by Frank Oz at the Daryl Roth Theater in New York, and co-produced The Lost Boys: A New Musical, based on the 1987 cult-classic vampire film.

Harris is a New York Times bestselling author for The Magic Misfits series and his memoir, Choose Your Own Autobiography. His most recent book is a collaboration with his husband, David Burtka, and released Both Sides of the Glass designed to offer the same experience for both drinkers and non-drinkers.

Ever expanding and redefining the scope of his work, Harris is a bestselling author, entrepreneur, husband, and father to two humans and four dogs.

JULIANNE HOUGH (Lola). Emmy Award-winner Julianne Hough is a true triple threat – dancer, actress, singer, and born entertainer. Known globally for her breakout on “Dancing with the Stars,” she’s the youngest pro to win twice, judge on the panel and now host the hit ABC series.

On screen, Hough has starred in Burlesque, Footloose, Rock of Ages, Safe Haven, Paradise and Grease Live!, and returned to film in 2026 after an eight-year hiatus in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s horror-dance spectacle The Bride.

On stage, Hough made her Broadway debut in 2022 in the critically acclaimed POTUS.

As an entrepreneur, Hough founded KINRGY, a movement and wellness platform empowering self-expression through dance. With a flagship studio in West Hollywood and worldwide digital access, KINRGY reaches and teaches thousands. She also co-founded Ovation, a next-gen dance convention and competition tour, alongside brother Derek Hough and DanceOne.

Hough’s creative project choices continue to prioritize blending movement and storytelling at the highest level.

AUSTIN SCOTT (Young Joe) made his debut playing ‘Hamilton’ on Broadway and the National Tour of Hamilton. He then originated the role of ‘Joe Scott’ in Bob Dylan’s Girl From the North Country, which was filmed as part of “Great Performances” for PBS and he can be heard singing “Slow Train” and “Hurricane” on the Grammy Award-nominated original cast recording. More recently, Austin played ‘Shakespeare’ in the hit musical & Juliet on Broadway and co-starred as ‘Omari’ in GODDESS at The Public Theater. Select television/film credits include Tyler Perry’s Netflix film A Jazzman’s Blues, the FX Limited series “Clipped” alongside Laurence Fishburne and Ed O’Neill, Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie (Peacock), BET’s “Sistas,” and “Pose”.
